Earl E. Dale, III
c/o Mr. Jesse Marr
Brockman Lane
Great Falls, Virginia 22066
Dear Mr. Date:
July 15, 1985
Re: Section 65, Parcel 2A
Mr. Jesse Marr, resident of your property on Brockman Lane, asked for
our assistance and recommendation regarding what he believed to be kerosene
in the house's well.
I visited the site on July 11 with Mr. Marr and agree, based on smell, that
there is kerosene or some similar product in the water. The human nose
can detect as little as approximately one part per billion of kerosene in
water, and it was easily noticeable to me. Private laboratories can
formally analyze for the presence and specific amount, if you wish. I
personally believe this would be a wasted expense.
Mr. Marr reported that the above ground kerosene tank had overturned and
spilled several gallons of kerosene two years ago. The tank was repaired,
but the kerosene - soaked soil was not removed. There are no other potential
sources of kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, etc., near the house. The closest
neighbor is 350 feet to the south.
The well and oil tank are over soils and rock formed from Triassic sandstone.
The top portion of which peres quickly. These rocks generally are oriented
in a northeast /southwest direction and slope down to the northwest.
They tend to be flat, "shaZey," rocks that are susceptible to water and /or
oil movement.
The well is 10 to 15 feet west of the oil tank, was drilled 25 or more
years ago (around 1962), and probably has no concrete grout, which would
prevent contaminants near the surface from entering it.
